Training Program for the Sewing Project for Women's Economic Empowerment in Yemen
The German-Yemen Center for Peace and Development (GYC) implemented significant sewing projects for women in remote areas during 2023 and 2024. These women, who traditionally are not involved in agriculture, were given the opportunity to learn sewing—a skill that enabled them to develop their own sources of income. They sold their handmade clothing not only in nearby villages but also in cities further afield.
Particularly in the regions of Khawlan and Bani Bahloul, located about 30 kilometers from the capital, Sanaa, over 120 individuals indirectly benefited from these initiatives. These projects significantly contributed to promoting the economic independence of the women and making them active participants in the local market. Besides acquiring craft skills, the projects sustainably improved the living conditions of the participating women and had a positive impact on the community by stimulating new economic activities in these otherwise underserved areas.
Teacher Training Project
The project aims to improve the quality of education in the Khawlan district of Sanaa through teacher training programs. A primary goal is to ensure that all students, especially girls, continue their education and that enrollment rates are increased.
In cooperation with the “North South Bridge Foundation,” a needs assessment was conducted in elementary schools, and a meeting was held to implement training in rural schools with high educational needs. The trainings focused on active learning, classroom management, and teaching organization for 22 teachers of both genders. The training materials were developed by experts from the Ministry of Education.
After the completion of the trainings, the specific needs of female teachers were discussed, including educational resources and the elimination of salary bottlenecks caused by the war. Key benefits of the project include the active participation of teachers, capacity building, and the positive impact on 520 students in the region.
Literacy Project with the Aim of Combating Illiteracy
Promoting women’s literacy is one of the objectives of the German Yemen Centre for Peace and Development e.V. (GYC), to strengthen the position of women in Yemen. This grants women access to their fundamental right to education, which is often denied to them. Educating mothers is crucial in creating a family environment that effectively supports the education of their children. GYC is continuously committed to teaching illiterate women to read and write and to supporting them on their further educational path.
School Bag Distribution and School Supplies Project
The German Yemen Centre for Peace and Development e.V. (GYC) is actively committed to promoting education in Yemen, especially through the “I Love My School” project. Since the start of the school year, GYC has visited public schools and provided 280 students with backpacks and stationery, including at the Saif-bin-yazan School in the remote village of Bait Oqab. Due to the tense security situation and state bankruptcy, which led to the suspension of teacher salaries, many schools are closed or only partially operational. GYC addresses this challenge by reopening schools in densely populated areas and hiring qualified educational staff. The initiative includes renovating and equipping schools, repairing sanitation facilities, and other measures to ensure a safe learning environment. By taking over the payment of teachers’ salaries, GYC also strengthens their financial independence and reduces the risk of school dropouts and the recruitment of children for combat purposes.
